Philadelphia's Stephen and Sandra Sheller 11th Street Family Health Services is highlighted in a Commonwealth Fund case study that shows how 11th Street's leaders have partnered with residents to create a center for health. A key part of the center's work has been to identify the role of trauma in poor health and to combine traditional counseling with creative arts therapies and mind-body interventions to help people cope with behavioral and physical health problems. The center grew out of an effort to serve North Philadelphia's public housing residents, whose high rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic conditions were compounded by poor access to primary care.
