Who Is Eligible for Veterans Administration Healthcare Benefits?

To be eligible, if veterans enlisted after Sept. 7, 1980, or entered active duty after Oct. 16, 1981, they must have served 24 continuous months or the full period for which they were called to active duty, unless any of the descriptions below are true. This minimum duty requirement may not apply if any of these are true.

  • Were discharged for a disability that was caused or made worse by active-duty service, or
  • Were discharged for a hardship or "early out," or
  • Served prior to Sept. 7, 1980

If a current or former member of the Reserves or National Guard, the veteran must have been called to active duty by a federal order and completed the full period for which called or ordered to active duty.

If currently or previously on active-duty status for training purposes only, this does not qualify the veteran for VA health care. Eligible veterans can apply using this link or call the toll-free hotline at 1-877-222-VETS.
